Low-mass stars in the massive H II region NGC 3603⋆ Deep NIR imaging with ANTU/ISAAC
نویسنده
چکیده
We have observed NGC 3603, the most massive visible H II region known in the Galaxy, with ANTU(VLT1)/ISAAC in the near-infrared (NIR) Js, H , and Ks-bands. Our observations are the most sensitive observations made to date of this dense starburst region, allowing us to investigate with unprecedented quality its low-mass stellar population. Our mass limit to stars detected in all three bands is 0.1M⊙ for a pre-main sequence star of age 0.7 Myr. The overall age of the pre-main sequence stars in the core region of NGC 3603 has been derived from isochrone fitting in the colour-magnitude diagram, leading to 0.3−1.0 Myr. The NIR luminosity functions show that the cluster is populated in low-mass stars at least down to 0.1M⊙. Our observations clearly show that sub-solar mass stars do form in massive starbursts.

متن کاملNGC 3603 – a Local Template for Massive Young Clusters
We present a study of the star cluster associated with the massive Galactic HII region NGC 3603 based on near-IR broad– and narrowband observations taken with ISAAC/VLT under excellent seeing conditions (≤ 0.4). We discuss color-color diagrams and address the impact of the high UV flux on the disk evolution of the low-mass stars. 1. Stellar Content and Ionized Gas around NGC 3603 NGC 3603 is th...
متن کاملThe Imf of the Massive Star-forming Region Ngc 3603 from Nir Ao Observations
We study the initial mass function (IMF) of one of the most massive galactic star-forming regions NGC 3603 to answer a fundamental question in current astrophysics: is the IMF universal, or does it vary? Using our very deep high angular resolution JHKSL ′ images obtained with the AO-assisted NAOS-CONICA instrument at the VLT/ESO, we have successfully revealed the low-mass stellar population dow...
متن کاملThe Low-Mass Stars in Starburst Clusters
If star formation depends strongly on the global properties of the environment in which they form, the slope of the IMF as well as the upper and lower mass cut-offs would be expected to vary significantly between violent starbursts and more quiescent star forming regions. To test this hypothesis we observed the stellar content of the two closest massive star forming regions, 30 Doradus and NGC ...
